Spilling Your Guts: Poetic Structure & Turns

You never know what you’ll find inside a shark—a polar bear, a pit bull still harnessed to its leash, songbirds, fur coats, porcupine quills, a plastic rain jacket, a valuable bottle of wine, a license plate, condoms, bags of potato chips, cigarettes, a spool of telephone wire, and a full suit of armor including the helmet.

But what about what’s inside you? When was the last time you found the contents of your guts revelatory? Join me for a six-week survey of poetic structures with maximum built-in spill, using Structure & Surprise: Engaging Poetic Turns (ed. Michael Theune, Teachers & Writers Collaborative, 2007) as our inspiration.

This advanced class is for poets with multiple classes under their belts. Questions? Email G&G. After class, students will receive a manageable reading and examples for the next session. In Week 2, we’ll begin workshopping new poems. Poems for Monday workshops are due the Sunday before, by noon CT.
